McSally on Accurate Representation
Jun 5, 2017
McSally Take a Stand came into being after several of Martha McSally’s constituents tried to reach out and engage with her constructively, and were rebuffed. Individually and as a group, we’ve all been taken aback by her defensive, resentful posture toward her own constituents. We had good reason to be surprised. Prior to the election, McSally worked hard to present herself as a very different kind of politician. The contrast between the sales pitch and the level of service she’s actually willing to deliver has been stark.
Before: “Southern Arizonans elected me to do a job representing them… and I am all-in on doing that job. I have spent my whole life defying stereotypes and labeling and I’m going to continue to be that independent voice for Southern Arizonans regardless of who wins the White House.”
~Martha McSally in the Tucson Weekly, May 2016
After: “There’s just an element out there that’s just, like, so against the President. Like they just can’t see straight. And all of a sudden on January 20th, I’m like his twin sister to them. And I’m, like, responsible for everything he does, and tweets and says. And they want me to be spending my time as a pundit. ‘I disagree with that. I agree with this.’ I have a job in the legislature!”
~Martha McSally to the Arizona Bankers Association, May 2017
Before: “We need more people that have this mindset of ‘Let’s get something done. Let’s fix things. Let’s not just accept things as they are. Let’s change them. And that has been my mindset since I’ve been in Washington, D.C.”
~Martha McSally in her campaign ad, “Dad,” released August 2016
After: “There are activists, political Democrats that are across the country, trying to create political theater by demanding these in-person town halls so that they can turn it into an ambush.”
~Martha McSally in a TeleTown Hall, February 2017
Before: “The district’s equal ideological split requires a moderate who is eager to work with anyone and serve everyone.”
~The Arizona Republic’s endorsement of Martha McSally, October 2016
After: “The Green Valley News and Sahuarita Sun will host a 90-minute town hall, with McSally taking questions from the audience… Organizers of a competing town hall that has repeatedly invited McSally – who has refused to attend – say they will go forward with their forum on (the same) night… McSally refused to attend the scheduled town hall in Tucson.”
